PAPER SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Please read all instructions thoroughly to ensure that your submission qualifies for review.
Eligibility:
We invite the submission of original academic papers appropriate to the themes expressed in the Call for Papers and Works, from graduate students across the disciplines. Because the conference is intended to showcase the work of current graduate students, submissions from undergraduates, faculty members, and professional authors and artists are usually not accepted. The conference is open to submissions from all Humanities departments and styles of philosophy, though submissions congenial to the Continental tradition in philosophy will be given priority for reasons of coherence. All papers must be complete at the time of submission; standalone paper proposals and abstracts will not be considered.
Formatting and Submission:
Complete papers should be formatted as Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) documents or a compatible format, and prepared for blind review. All identifying information should be included on a separate cover sheet, including the author’s name, title of the presentation, institutional affiliation, mailing address, email address, and phone number. No identifying information should appear within the paper itself, in order to ensure the impartiality of the blind review committee. If the paper is a collaborative submission, all identifying information from all contributors must be included on the cover sheet.
Please include an abstract of no more than 500 words along with the paper, summarizing your thesis and outlining the argument. Papers must be suitable for a 20-minute presentation, approximately 3000 words. The committee reserves the right to disqualify submissions solely on the basis of excessive length, and may request that accepted submissions be edited to fit within the allotted time. Papers must be formatted with citations—either footnotes or endnotes—and should include a bibliography if in-text citations are used. If the presentation references images, these should be included either within the body of the paper or in a credited list appended to the end. (Bibliography, notes, and images will not be counted toward the length of the paper.)

Review Criteria:
Because submissions are evaluated through blind review, no preference will be given on the basis of race, sex, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, institutional affiliation, or other demographic factors, even as such factors may become apparent within the body of the paper. Papers are judged based solely on the following five criteria.
1) Academic rigor
2) Relevance to the conference theme
3) Originality
4) Clarity and coherence
5) Overall quality and style of writing
The review committee is composed of graduate students from the Stony Brook Philosophy and Fine Arts Departments, who are familiar with the standards of graduate-level academic writing and with current scholarship. Papers which fail to demonstrate faithful engagement with source material—lacking citations, citing dubious sources, paraphrasing extensively—or which display significant grammatical deficits may be rejected regardless of other factors.

Because the conference is intended to showcase the work of current graduate students, submissions from undergraduates, faculty members, and professional authors or artists are usually not accepted. Participants must be willing to attend the conference and be present on the panel or evening reception (in the case of a scheduled performance) to which they are assigned. In addition, all works must be available for the duration of the four week exhibition* at the AC Institute in New York, commencing with a Chelsea opening on Thursday, March 29th at 6:00 P.M. Participants will be responsible for the delivery and pick-up of their work. Assistance from the artist is also recommended in the case of complicated installation requirements. All artwork submissions must include a substantive presentation proposal (as described below) in order to qualify for review; submissions containing only images, video, audio, etc. will not be considered. Submissions in all media, including performance and sound, are eligible for review.
* One time performances will be considered, however please clearly indicate whether you intend for documentation to accompany the performance in the exhibition, and what form this documentation will take.

Submissions should be prepared for blind review. All identifying information, including your name, institutional affiliation, mailing address, email address, and phone number, should appear only on your submitted CV. No identifying information should appear within the digital images or written submission, in order to ensure the impartiality of the blind review committee--exceptions may be applicable for autobiographical or performance work. If the submission is collaborative, all identifying information from all contributors must appear on a joint CV, or else separate CV's must be submitted for each contributor.
Artist Statement
All artists will be expected to present an artist talk, academic paper, performative lecture, or otherwise speak lucidly on their work and the theme Still Life? as part of a conference panel with other graduate students. Cross conversation is encouraged between artists, philosophers, and emerging scholars of other disciplines. Each person will be allotted a period of 20 minutes during which to present—your proposal should demonstrate your ability to articulate your ideas clearly and appropriately for such a setting.
Images, Video, and Audio
We strongly prefer that you submit the images, video, and/or audio representing the work to be presented, along with your presentation proposal, via email. Please include no more than ten (10) jpeg images for up to five (5) works, or five (5) minutes of video or audio, not to exceed a total file size of 25MB. Your images should be sized at 72dpi, 1000 pixels on the longest dimension. Send your entire submission—written proposal and images/video/audio—to philosophyartconference@gmail.com. All files should be labeled without personal information, indicating the submission part, i.e. “artist_statement.doc” or “artwork2_detail.jpg” If it is necessary to send your submission in hard copy, please contact the conference coordinator at philosophyartconference@gmail.com for mailing instructions.

- A 1-2 page artist resume or CV with contact and affiliation information
- An artist statement which explicitly addresses the theme's relevance to submitted work(s)
- A brief proposal for artwork presentation indicating installation needs, which specifies all equipment (if applicable) that the artist will supply.
- A list of submitted works including title, media, dimensions and year for each artwork. This information should be numbered in accordance to the images submitted.
- Digital representation of the visual and sound/time-based work to be considered for presentation. Up to 5 artworks may be submitted.
