Artwork Installation Logistics

Exhibition:

The exhibition space will be in various rooms on the second floor of 401 Park Ave S, New York, NY, including three classrooms and two larger meeting rooms. Please see the area specs (below) for more information. (Please note that, while certain rooms are marked as available, we do not yet have current information on specific availability for the upcoming year.)

We offer an unconventional exhibition space and hope that you will take advantage of it when considering your installations. For example, an artist from the 2008 conference utilized the classroom windows to display her work. She combined photography with curtains, using natural sunlight to illuminate the images. Another artist took advantage of our video display capacities to offer a full audio-visual experience of his Iraq war mosaic presentation in the main conference room.

Please note that physical alterations to the installation spaces cannot be permitted (e.g., wall and floor painting, removal of whiteboards or lighting fixtures, etc.). Also note that all classrooms have drop ceilings, which may interfere with the installation of pieces requiring ceiling suspension. Don’t be discouraged! We are willing to work with you to devise creative means of displaying your artwork in this unconventional setting; limited funds may become available to assist you with minor logistical needs.

We are particularly well-equipped for video format presentations and invite artists to consider ways in which they may display their artwork of any medium in this format.

We will have a PC laptop available for video exhibitions, though full capacity for other computer operating systems is also available upon advance request.

Any accepted musical submissions that entail live performances will be presented during the conference receptions (in addition to their formal presentation, if the artist is assigned to participate in a conference panel). Live performances of dance or other performance art may also be presented during receptions at the discretion of the conference organizers.

Panels:

The conference is organized into multiple panels, usually of three presenters each. An interdepartmental faculty member will chair each panel and a student respondent from Stony Brook University will offer an analysis of the presentations including questions to begin the discussion.

All panelists, regardless of disciplinary background, are expected to prepare an oral presentation of approximately 20 minutes (approximately 3000 words or 8-11 pages) in length. Artists who do not wish to be assigned to a panel must specify in the initial submission that it is intended for installation or performance only.

Artists presenting on panels are expected to be able to discuss the themes guiding their work in detail and to engage thoughtfully with the other presenters on the panel. Still, we respect the fact that many presenters do not have formal philosophical training, and we do not require that artists possess extensive knowledge of philosophical thinkers and their positions. Additionally, many of conference participants from philosophical backgrounds may be equally non-conversant in artistic vocabularies and art history. One of the grounding assumptions of this conference is that these differences do not pose an insurmountable obstacle to interdisciplinary dialogue. Faculty moderators will be present to help mediate these sources of potential misunderstanding, and have done so in past conferences with success to the benefit of all present.
