Philosophy and Art at Stony Brook Manhattan
The Stony Brook Manhattan campus is home to the Masters in Philosophy program. This terminal MA program, with an emphasis in Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics, explores philosophical aspects of the Fine Arts - painting, sculpture, drawing, installations, mixed-media - as well as architecture and literature. It also examines aspects of the art world as illuminated through philosophical analysis - museum and exhibition culture, art criticism, and art theory. In March 2008, the Philosophy and the Arts Program presented its first annual graduate student conference, Veils. Rooted in the program's deep commitment to investigating the dialogue between art and philosophy, this conference showcased interpretive work from both disciplinary fields, welcoming the presentation of both academic papers and works of art in various media. In 2009 and 2010, the program hosted its second and third conferences, Narrativity and Collectively, which were received with even greater enthusiasm and appreciation for their interdisciplinary spirit, and which firmly established the conference as an annual event. In 2011, Redemption, called forth academic work on topics as diverse as palingenesis and forgiveness. Artworks, exhibited in an array of media, subtly brought out complex ideas around memory and the power of music to re-place us. The 2012 conference, Still Life?, hosted by the AC Institute in Chelsea, NYC, probed questions of nature, vitality, and permanence. Philosophical papers were accompanied by an unprecedented month-long art show in the AC Institute's gallery space, further expanding the possibilities of Stony Brook's Philosophy and the Arts Conference.
This coming year will be our sixth annual conference, Soundscapes and Territories, which will take place on March 29-30th, 2013, in Manhattan. We will once again explore the complex relationship between art and philosophy with the hope of continuing a tradition of successful, mutually beneficial dialogue.
