CALL FOR PAPERS AND ARTWORKS
From inside the privacy of the home and containment in the gallery to the open space of the urban landscape and public viewership, the work of art undergoes transformations in perception, power, and acceptance simply based on whether it is situated inside conventional institutions or on the edges of law and normative frameworks.
As philosophers and art critics, we are accustomed to addressing works of art that make it to the gallery space, or are highly regarded amongst wealthy coinsurers. But what lies at the edges and borders of the art world, marginalized and excluded from its orthodox, conventional institutions? Art’s “outside” lies beyond the confines of institutionalized norms: it adorns the walls of our modern cities in the form of graffiti writing and street art. It escapes designation as high-art in the form of comics, hip-hop, and the “outsider art” of the intentionally untrained artist. Art on the outside lies at the edges of the capitalist marketplace, in a revolutionary place where tangible value cannot be assigned. This can be seen in performance pieces and land-art installations that are intentionally ephemeral, and/or created specifically so they cannot be sold.
Stony Brook’s 2015 Philosophy and Art conference invites you to explore the edges of art and philosophy. We invite both artists and philosophers who are interested in margins and marginalization, the transition from intimacy to publicity, the solitude of nature versus the spectatorship of the cosmopolitan, and what it means to be an artist and/or philosopher on the “inside” or “outside” of our modern world.
Further questions up for discussion (but certainly not limited to):
· Art in the Public/Private Sphere: Does the meaning of the work of art change when it is situated in a museum opposed to the privacy of the home? Do works of art situated outside carry a different message than those that remain inside? Who engages with public, cosmopolitan art? What about art located in rural areas? What role does isolation play in art and/or philosophy? Is art always created with the intention of being seen by other people?
· Lawfulness and Lawlessness of Art: Does the meaning of the work of art change when it is publicly accepted or publicly denounced? What is profanity’s place in art? Does art itself need to function at the edges of common acceptance and everyday conduct? Where do public perception and artistic perception intersect?
· Edges of the Art and Philosophy: Where is the distinction between what is and what is not art? What does it mean to be a marginalized philosopher or artist in the modern world? What is the spirit of the Other in art and philosophy? How do the subversive writings of women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community, shape the art world at large? Are artists and/or philosophers marginalized in the public sphere?
